THOMSON WINS

Members of Canada’s National Firearms Association are very pleased that Ian Thomson has been found not guilty on all counts arising from his use of a firearm for self-defense during the firebombing of his home.  According to Sheldon Clare, President of Canada’s National Firearms Association, “The decision doesn’t change the law, but it shows that Canadians do have the right to protect themselves with their firearms when necessary.  Mr. Thomson has gone through a terrible ordeal in the courts that no citizen should ever have to suffer.”

On an early 2010 August morning, three masked men lobbed improvised explosive devices at Ian Thomson’s home. Ian Thomson reacted by retrieving his firearm from his safe and firing warning shots at the attackers. Initially, the Crown had charged him with four crimes, careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, unsafe storage of his firearm and unsafe storage of ammunition. On March 2, 2011, the first two were dropped. On January 3rd 2012, Justice Colvin ruled that Ian Thomson’s actions were reasonable and the final two charges were dropped.

Sheldon Clare commented that “This is a joyous day for responsible firearms owners and those who value the right of self-defense. Mr. Thomson should never have been charged in the first place,” exclaimed Clare. “Cases like this expose a great chasm between the enforcement of the law and the rights of victims to defend themselves,” stated Clare. “I thank Justice Colvin for his wise decision, and I compliment Mr. Thomson’s lawyer Ed Burlew for his tireless fight on behalf of his client,” concluded Clare.  “Ian Thomson has been left with a heavy financial burden due to his ordeal and the possibility of an appeal, and so I encourage people to donate”.
