NFA protects Quebec range users from excessive rules

The NFA is pleased to report the favourable outcome of its most recent initiative to protect the rights of Quebec sports shooters.

A few weeks ago, members of the “Centre de tir Maska” (a Quebec shooting range) complained to the NFA that the range’s management now required them to fill out an attendance registry, when shooting non-restricted firearms, at ranges where shooting of restricted and prohibited firearms is also allowed. They were told that the requirement was based on directives received from the Quebec Department of public security/Chief Firearms Officer (the “CFO”).

The NFA wrote to the range’s management and to the CFO, arguing that the practice was not supported by applicable legislation (Quebec’s Law 9 and related regulations) and that it was an infringement of shooters’ privacy rights. We have been informed that Centre de tir Maska and all other Quebec ranges have now discontinued this practice, after receiving “clarifications” from the CFO. The NFA also received a letter from the CFO confirming the foregoing.

This shows that even police forces are not above the law, but are merely charged with applying it.

We are extremely pleased with this outcome and we remind all of our members to remain vigilant and to report any practice that appears to be in violation of their legal rights.
